A Time Will Come

A time will come

There will be nothing for you to punch but the wall

‘Won’t be as satisfying as her skull

Your fists are bruised and it hurts

But you’ll do it over again over again like you’re cursed

A time will come

Her heart on the floor, she’ll pick it up

Whole and restored, it’ll piss you off

Because you love to keep things apart

You love to keep things cracked, broken and shattered

A time will come

Her frown and tears will be rare

Her optimism and smile won’t disappear

You wonder where she gets her strength

The answers will leave you in despair

The time is near

Something in the air whispers in her ears

She chooses the back door with her last shred of confidence

You return to a house of emptiness, yea, nothingness

Every inch of your body, every cell knows what this means

The time is now

There is nothing for you to punch but the wall

Surely not as satisfying as her skull

Look, your fists are bruised and it hurts

But you do it over again over again like you’re cursed

  1. A really well written piece that touches on the hot topic of Gender Based Voilence. I especially like the repetition of what I think are the most important lines in the poem–if there ever was such a thing–“There is nothing for you to punch but the wall
Surely not as satisfying as her skull
Look, your fists are bruised and it hurts
But you do it over again over again like you’re cursed”. I believe these lines add a layer of emphasis to the poem and ends it in a skillful manner. Well done Grâce, keep it up

  2. Physical abuse has no excuse. I understand why some people feel they have to stay but no one has to! I have a friend who put up with abuse for so long, still does I am sure. I offered her to live at my house until she had things sorted out. She didn’t want to go. I don’t know why anyone thinks they deserve to be abused in any way.

    1. Yes, physical abuse has no excuse. But most victims do not always want to leave. Sometimes they still love their partners and believe in change, other times it’s because they are scared of what people will say. The fear of starting all over again is also another thing. But no one should have to go through such violence. It’s the best option to leave.

    2. Some people are scared to leave. There are too many cases of people being stalked and killed by an ex. They’ve been threatened, their kids and pets have been threatened. A restraining order only works on sane people. And there’s the financial angle to consider, even if the abuser contributes nothing to the household, it can be expensive to relocate and too many people are living paycheck to paycheck. There are not enough shelters, not enough of a safety net. And a person who is smacked around and constantly told they are worthless can lose their confidence. All of these things need to be remedied.

Excellent poem. And may everyone going through that find it in themselves to leave, may all the abusers end up alone.

  3. Chai! As i read, all I could think of was the idea of someone speaking by inspiration. The ‘prophecy’ is apt and certain. Meanwhile, I have to agree that it takes one possessed/cursed to derive pleasure in making another’s life miserable. But there is always an end to the madness. Most times, such ends are terrible.
