It’s the Little Things in Life

“The true secret of happiness lies in taking a genuine interest in all the details of daily life.”

How far will you go to find happiness when you can find it within and all around?

The pursuit of happiness is real.

Sometimes we get carried away by the complications of life that we ignore the simple things we should be grateful for. We take these small things for granted without realizing when we are contented, life gets fuller and more satisfying.

If you are not thankful for what you already have, what makes you think you would find gratification in the things to come?

True happiness arises from discovering the little pleasures of life.

I have thought deeply; I came up with a list of little things in life I should always be thankful for notwithstanding how bad things may be. These tiny things, no matter how insignificant they appear become a big deal and really precious when we lose them. The major things we pursue for happiness wouldn’t even make sense without these little things of life.

Here’s my list of the little things that make life good, meaningful and worth living:

1. Music

“Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything.”

“Without music, life would be a mistake” ― Friedrich Nietzsche

2. Fresh Air

“Fresh air and exercise. That’s all you need to stay slim and feel better about life.” — Kaitie Hopkins

3. Sunshine

“O, Sunshine! The most precious gold the be found on earth.” — Roman Payne

4. Moonlight

“The moon is a loyal companion. It never leaves. It’s always there, watching, steadfast, knowing us in our light and dark moments, changing forever just as we do. Everyday it’s a different version of itself. Sometimes weak and wan, sometimes strong and full of light. The moon understands what it means to be human. Uncertain. Alone. Cratered by imperfections.” — Tahereh Mafi

5. Rain

“Celebrate the rain; it only means that the sun shall shine bigger and brighter than ever.”

“Rain is grace; rain is the sky descending to the earth; without rain, there would be no life.” — John Updike

“God puts rainbows in the clouds so that each of us – in the dreariest and most dreaded moments – can see a possibility of hope.” – Maya Angelou

8. Flowers

“Flowers always make people better, happier and more helpful; they are sunshine, food and medicine for the soul.” — Luther Burbank

9. Fruits and Veggies

“There is no longer any question about the importance of fruits and vegetables in our diet. The greater the quantity and assortment of fruits and vegetables consumed, the lower the incidence of heart attacks, strokes, and cancer. There is still some controversy about which foods cause which cancers and whether certain types of fat are the culprits with certain cancers, but there’s one thing we know for sure: raw vegetables and fresh fruits have powerful anti-cancer agents.” — Joel Fuhrman

10. Trees

“Trees exhale for us so that we can inhale them to stay alive. Can we ever forget that? Let us love trees with every breath we take until we perish.” ― Munia Khan

11. Food

“Cooking is all about people. Food is maybe the only universal thing that really has the power to bring everyone together. No matter what culture, everywhere around the world, people eat together.” — Guy Fieri

“Three meals plus bedtime make 4 sure blessings each day.” – Mason Cooley

12. Good Health

Home is a shelter from storms-all sorts of storms. — William J. Bennett

28. Movies

“A good movie can take you out of your dull funk and the hopelessness that so often goes with slipping into a theatre; a good movie can make you feel alive again, in contact, not just lost in another city. Good movies make you care, make you believe in possibilities again.” — Pauline Kael

  2. I love & needed this. When COVID first began to affect our lives I learned to listen to nature. Living in the city you don’t hear the birds chirp in the morning. During quarantine I heard them every morning. I gave me great satisfaction

  3. Such an amazing list of great ‘little’ things!! So true that these, mostly free, little things can give us all the joy we need and yet we go about our lives foolishly chasing things like material success, power and wealth that,by their nature, are unable to give lasting happiness!

  4. Always look for something to grateful about. I think this year a lot of people had been enlightened to what truly matters in life, and that we should all be grateful to what we already have— the little things, that we normally ignore. ☺️

    1. Yes, this year has opened our eyes to a lot of things we used to be blind about. The lockdown created time for us to realize some things our usual busy lives made us ignore.

  5. “If you are not thankful for what you already have, what makes you think you would find gratification in the things to come?” Indeed! I think too many people lose sight of how much they have to be grateful for because they are too focused on what clever marketing has convinced them that they need. Your list is long. For me, health is right up there at the top…but that relies on things like good food and shelter. And peace of mind, which is internal and individual. Every day is a fresh blessing.
