ALMOST

“Look what you made me do,

What have you done,boo?

The blame is on you!

Oh, you know this is true.

I’ve never tried this before,

Never, ever, never, ever,

I am one who always ignores,

You pushed me way too far.

You do not deserve love –

Love of any kind,

Everything about you sucks!

Who will want you, now?

Better believe it darling!

You are such a bad person,

Without me, you are nothing!

Hope you take this as a lesson!

Well, the bright side is this,

I love you, yea, you’re lucky!

Your lips I still want to kiss

‘Cause I find forgiveness easy.

No one can love you so dearly,

That is why your heart belongs to me,

No one, no one can, my honey,

That is why you are stuck with me.”

Said the abuser when he returned,

After she’d nursed her bruises,

After she’d counted all her scars,

After she’d almost made up her mind.

Her bags, she unpacked,

And made excuses on his behalf,

Forgetting he never really apologised,

At the junction of Almost, she turned right back.

      1. Thank you for such an intimate incite into the truth of Domestic Abuse. I also am Trustee Director of a UK charity that over 26 years has sheltered and rehabilitated over 3600 women and their children after horrific experiences. Many have drug and/alcohol issues so we also have a recovery program and are perhaps the only shelter in the UK where a Mother can keep her children during rehab, It is such a strong incentive for her to win through. Thanks for sharing this Omo and others with comments.

        1. Thank you very much for reading and all that you do for these women. It’s heroic. May the Lord continue to strengthen you. You might also like some other poems in my book.

  1. Abuse victims go through a range of stages of emotions. Your poem depicts one of them, My wife endured that in her first marriage, and wrote book of poems about the experience, “In My Shoes” by Lyn Crain. If you can find a copy, you might appreciate it.

  2. Omo, the more we tell our own story, whether in prose or poetry or art or music or dance, the more it gives light to others to do the same themselves. I love your poem, Almost. Even the title holds the hopeful ambivalence that your writer holds in her decision-making.

  3. I’m moved. It’s stories like this that drive my heart daily to want to bring healing to those who’ve never heard how deeply they are treasured and how fiercely they are loved by God, who never turns on them! Dear Omo, you are so loved and precious. I pray the love of God overflows on you and all who read this who have lived in such confusion and pain. It’s ok to leave. It’s hard to do, but ok to leave. It’s good to find our first love before we find another love… that, is Jesus. He washes away the trauma and rewrites our story! He rewrote mine! And now I’m so in love, with him. 🙂
